Rebel Resources

In my years of veganism and travel, I have collected a treasure trove of resources to help me along my way. I’ve done my best to share my knowledge and information with you in my Rebel Vegan books.

Below is an abridged version of some of my favourite resources that are published in full at the back of each if my books.

I hope they prove helpful in creating your best Rebel Vegan Life!

Download these apps on your phone ASAP! These resources will help you with just about everything – booking a hotel room, scoring a yummy vegan meal, communicating in a foreign language, and more.

  • Vegan Passport: This is a digital food card available in various languages to help you explain your dietary preferences. The passport explains in detail which ingredients vegans do and don’t eat in 78 different languages.

  • AirVegan: Use this app when heading to the airport. AirVegan shows how vegan-friendly an airport is. It lists all places that offer vegan options, and even tells you where they are located. Some of you may have encountered this app back when they only supported airports in the United States. Good news - the app went international with its listings back in 2018.

  • V-Cards: Vegan Abroad: V-cards, vegan cards in this case, are translation cards to help you order food abroad. This is a similar concept to the food cards offered up in the Hot Spots chapter of this guide, only they offer translations in over 100 languages on demand.

  • Veganagogo: This is another translation app - because you can never have too many. Users choose from a list of pre-written questions and statements, making it easier to use than Google Translate in some scenarios.

  • Veggly: Can’t imagine dating an omnivore? Looking for a romantic partner that can hold you accountable in your vegan journey? Check out Veggly, a vegan dating app currently available in 181 countries.

  • Vegan Check: This app double checks that products are entirely vegan before purchasing. It also includes services such as tattoo studios and salons.

  • Vegan Pocket: Vegan Pocket scans barcodes to check if the product is vegan. No more reading confusing food labels! Just scan and done.

  • abillion | Impact made easy: This app lets you search for vegan brands and products near you, wherever you are around the world. After finding a vegan product on the app, you can even read customer reviews.

Rebel Vegan's Recommended Books

CLASSIC READS

  • Diet for a Small Planet (1971) by Frances Moore Lappe: A groundbreaking book arguing that world hunger is caused by the meat industry. It was the first time that meat was shown to be unhealthy and leading to global poverty.

  • Animal Liberation (1975) by Peter Singer: This book is widely considered the founding philosophical statement of its ideas within the animal liberation movement. Singer claimed that industrial farming is responsible for more pain and misery than all the wars of history put together.

  • The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health (2004) by T. Colin Cambell: This takes the reader through a twenty-year study that looked at mortality rates from cancer and other chronic diseases from 1973 to the 1990s in 65 counties in China. The China Study examines the link between the consumption of animal products (including dairy) and chronic illnesses such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and bowel cancer.

MODERN READS

  • Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows by Melanie Joy: The social psychologist who coined the word and hidden belief system of ‘carnism.’ (Her YouTube channel is good as well).

  • Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters by Melanie Joy, PhD: This book is recommended for anyone living with or in close relationships with non-vegans.

  • We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast by Jonathon Safran Foer: This book explains how collective human action is the only way to save the planet, and as the title suggests, this begins with what is on our plates.

  • Eating Animals by Jonathon Safran Foer: Part memoir, part investigative report. This book is a moral examination of vegetarianism, farming, and the food we eat.
